Thanks to the centre established by Suryo Prawiroatmodjo, Indonesians' knowledge of their natural environment is increasing.

To change people's attitudes towards conservation of Indonesia's natural heritage, S. Prawiroatmodjo created the country's first environmental education centre in 1990, a pioneering effort for which he won a Rolex Award.

In the nursery he established at his home, S. Prawiroatmodjo explains details of plant cultivation to two colleagues.

Thanks to his Rolex Award, S. Prawiroatmodjo founded the Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidup (PPLH), an outdoor centre dedicated to environmental education and tucked into the rainforest on the slopes of the Penanggungan volcano in east Java.
