Dr Favaloro is a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon whose work and research have been granted numerous national and international awards. He is the author of 176 articles relating to his scientific work, and a book Surgical Treatment of Coronary Arteriosclerosis.


He is presently chief of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Guemes Clinic in Buenos Aires. ln addition to his responsibilities there, he is a member of more than 20 international surgical and medical societies in the areas of surgery, cardiology, thoracic surgery, transplantation and internal medicine. He holds honorary membership in similar societies in Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia and Bolivia.


ln his professional career, Dr Favaloro has practiced thoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the U.S., as a member of the staff, from 1966 until 1971. Since then he has been official visiting professor at the University of Toronto (1975), president of the Argentine College of Cardiovascular Surgeons (1975), president of the Argentine Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (1975), member of the National Academy of Sciences (1976), Latin American chairman of PAMA's section on Cardiovascular Surgery (1976), member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Surgery (1976), member of the editorial board of Clinical Cardiology (1977), as well as president of the Favaloro Foundation, devoted to teaching and research.
