Luis Marden

Luis Marden, an iconic former chief of the National Geographic Society, was so steeped in matters photographic that by the time he was 19 years old, he had written a book on the subject. He became one of the world’s great specialists in underwater photography.

A freelance journalist and photographer since 1932, he joined the editorial staff of the National Geographic magazine in 1934 and embarked on a brilliant career. He served as foreign correspondent for this journal from 1940 to 1966, and then became chief of the foreign editorial staff.

Luis Marden is one of the world’s greatest specialists in both underwater photography and deep-sea diving research. ln addition to his many articles on these subjects, he has produced a number of complementary documentary films.

Luis Marden is a member of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and of the National Press and Cosmos Clubs, in Washington, DC.

Luis Marden died on 3 March, 2003.
