Project Goal

Develop a "living museum" of traditional boats to preserve this national craft

Location: Bangladesh

"Boatbuilding is one of the oldest crafts of this country. Its authenticity makes it a masterpiece of art and technology, part of the memory of humankind.”

With a lifelong love of water and traditional wooden boats, enterprising Bangladeshi woman Runa Khan is determined to save the unique cultural heritage of Bangladeshi boat-building.

She is establishing a “living museum” 20 kilometres from the capital, Dhaka, which will open in April 2007. The public will be able to watch as boat carpenters build 40 types of traditional boats.
