Project Goal

Protect crops from frost through a new technology

Location: Uruguay

“The system succeeds where other methods have failed [to protect plants] from frost because Professor Guarga has taken a scientific approach to the problem, and yet there is nothing complicated about it.”

In 1998, Rafael Guarga won a Rolex Award for his innovative and inexpensive method of protecting crops from frost. Since then he has continued to refine the technology, further reducing the cost to farmers.

His hard work is bearing fruit. The Selected Inverted Sink system (SIS) is winning him customers beyond his native Latin America — in both the United States and Europe.
