As one of Argentina’s foremost scientists and educators, Dr Guillermo Jaim-Etcheverry has spent a lifetime furthering medical research and education, dual interests that were fostered by his parents – a physician and a teacher. Jaim-Etcheverry was intellectually curious from an early age and went on to build an impressive academic record, including a medical degree and a Ph.D. with honours from the School of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. In the mid-1960s, he embarked on a career as a neurobiologist at Argentina’s National Council of Scientific and Technical Research where he was made principal investigator in 1984. Two years later, after more than two decades of teaching and research at the School of Medicine’s Department of Cell Biology and Histology, Jaim-Etcheverry became a professor as well as dean of the school, a position he held for four years. In 2002, he was elected president of the university, Argentina’s biggest with 250,000 students.
For Dr Jaim-Etcheverry, "providing quality education to everybody is the main objective". He believes this is an effective way to fight poverty and improve conditions in Argentina.
A prolific writer in the press, he recently published the award-winning and best-selling book, "The Educational Tragedy". Among his many accolades, he is a member of the National Academy of Education and in 2001 received the National Academy of Medicine’s Master of Medicine prize. Jaim-Etcheverry is also a lover of the arts who enjoys literature, painting, music and cinema.
