"I wanted to do something different and challenging," says Dr Kanwaljit Soin of her career as an orthopaedic and hand surgeon. As one of only two women orthopaedic specialists in Singapore, she has demonstrated her determination to succeed against all odds. "Kani got where she is through grit, gut and gumption," remarks a childhood friend. Noted as much for her single–minded commitment to women’s rights as for her medical accomplishments, Dr Soin, a founding member and past president of AWARE – the Association of Women for Action and Research – is one of her country’s most visible and respected public figures. During four years in government as Singapore’s first woman to serve as a nominated member of Parliament, she helped turn the spotlight on family, health care and employment issues. Juggling her various roles with remarkable ease, Soin also finds time to serve as a member of the National Council of Social Service and as chairperson of the Singapore chapter of UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women), which seeks to promote the well-being of women and children in developing countries. Dr Soin’s medical career as well as the many positions she has held in welfare, advocacy, artistic and professional organisations helped gain her the title of Singapore’s "Woman of the Year" in 1992. Adventurous in all that she does, the energetic doctor enjoys windsurfing and travel to far-flung areas such as Antarctica. |
