Oscar Rodríguez is a man who is always ready for a new challenge. Inspired by the spectacular scenery of his native Chiapas in southern Mexico, the world-famous explorer, writer and award-winning photographer developed a lasting enthusiasm for hiking and exploring during his childhood.
Armed with a degree in sports medicine, he set out on a lifetime of adventure. Whether mountain climbing, diving, cycling or parachuting, Dr Rodríguez demonstrates an unshakeable resolve to complete his many exploits. During the 1980s and early 1990s, he scaled the highest peaks in the world, from the Andes to the Himalayas. In 1996, he became the first and, to date, only Latin American – and one of the few athletes worldwide – to be included twice in the "Guinness Book of Records" for his two record–breaking marathon cycling expeditions in Mexico. Harsh conditions are the norm for Rodríguez, who endured temperatures of 40 degrees below zero to become the first Mexican to reach the summit of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas, and cycle around it on a mountain bike.
When not on expeditions, Dr Rodríguez spends his time teaching and lecturing. He is currently conducting an anti-drug campaign in Mexican schools and promoting the benefits of cycling and mountain climbing. For Rodríguez, limits exist only in one’s mind: "I think that if you’re dedicated and persistent, you can succeed in anything you undertake."
