Time for a change
Global warming is real, it is worse than we thought, and it is here to stay, according to an authoritative report issued in January by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in Shanghai, China. But it takes more than the advice of hundreds of leading experts and scientists to spur policy makers to action. Renowned environmentalist and diplomat Sir Crispin Tickell, one of the key voices on climate change for the last 25 years, speaks about science, public policy and global warming.

A brief glimpse of Zeugma
With the completion of a hydroelectric dam in April 2000, the waters of the Euphrates river rose in the area of Belkis, Turkey, seeping over the freshly excavated remains of Zeugma, a once powerful city established in 300 BC. For four years prior to the flooding, Catherine Abadie-Reynal, an Associate Laureate in the 1998 Rolex Awards, directed the emergency excavation at Zeugma, uncovering many of its secrets from under centuries of earth before they were submerged under water.

Proven remedy
In the prosperous but legalistic world of health care in the United States,
hospitals are required by law to discard all opened surgical supplies after an operation, even those that have not been used. Realising the dire needs of hospitals in the developing world, 1996 Laureate Dr William Rosenblatt came up with a cure for the waste – a recycling programme known as REMEDY. Today, hundreds of hospitals have taken Rosenblatt’s lead and are shipping their unused surgical materials to the needy.

New Laureates honoured
Five new Laureates and five Associate Laureates were named in the 2000 Rolex Awards for Enterprise. The Laureates received their prizes last September in New York at a gala ceremony attended by hundreds of people who heard of the winners’ exciting endeavours. The Associate Laureates were recognised at events in Sri Lanka, France, Israel and the United States.
