Biography

Ever defying the odds, ecologist and ornithologist Reuven Yosefsingle-handedly fended off vested commercial interests in order to transform a former garbage dump in Eilat, in southernmost Israel, into a sanctuary for birds migrating to and from their winter feeding grounds in Africa.
The former Israeli army officer won a Rolex Award in 2000 to support this remarkable feat.
Born in India in 1957, Yosef migrated to Israel in the 1970s and moved to Eilat in 1993. Equipped with a degree in ornithology and training in the United States, he created the sanctuary as part of the International Birding & Research Centre, of which he is director.
The Award has helped Yosef to leverage further funds for the centre, now a field station of Ben Gurion University of the Negev, where he is a professor in the life sciences department and has begun setting up an ornithology department. He also mentors graduate students wordwide.
