Developing a new method of silk farming
India is the world’s second-largest silk producer, after China. More than 200,000 families are involved in small-scale silk cocoon production in India.
"I am convinced that in farming, management methods which are not environmentally benign and integrated will not be economical and sustainable.”
A former military officer-turned-farmer discovered that the usual techniques, using fertiliser and pesticides, led to declining yields. He has developed innovative natural farming practices for mulberry production and silkworm rearing that preserve the environment, produce better results and cost less than half conventional methods.
