A childhood passion for digging and uncovering the secrets of past civilizations led Geoffrey Summers, born in London in 1950, to a degree in ancient history and archaeology, a Ph.D. on early Bronze Age societies and to his current position teaching archaeology at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey where he lives and works with his architect wife.
In 1993, Summers began using pioneering methods to map and explore an Iron-age city atop Mount Kerkenes, central Turkey, which he is today more than ever convinced is the ancient capital Pteria.
Major excavations of the site in 2000 were followed by further excavations of the city’s Cappadocia Gate in 2003 thanks to the Rolex Award that Summers received in 2002. He attributes the ongoing success of the project to the prize.
Summers expects that his concurrent heritage project at Ile de la Passe in Mauritius will soon be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
