A panorama of glaciers around the world
Bernard Francou, research director at the Institut de recherche pour le développement (Institute for development research) in Paris, has been observing the glaciers of the Andes mountains for 15 years. Chosen as an Associate Laureate in the 2000 Rolex Awards for his pioneering work in ice-core drilling and analysis of glaciers, in 2007 this skilled alpinist published an inspiring book, “Les Glaciers à l’épreuve du climat” (“Glaciers challenged by climate”). Compiled with Christian Vincent, a research engineer working at the Glaciology Institute in Grenoble for the leading French research organisation, CNRS, the book analyses the reasons, processes and effects of glacier retreat in a lively, easy-to-understand way. The book also provides the reader with an impressive array of photos of glaciers around the world, along with historical analysis, a glossary and numerous short texts on many aspects of glaciology. Francou also contributed to “Glaciers, forces et fragilités” (“Glaciers, strengths and weaknesses”), a book of photos published in September 2007.
